Unfortunately, I'm going to have to give you guys a shortened version because I've promised a longer, detailed
version to another publication.
There he was, in full spendor...tall, suntanned and larger than life handsome. I kinda expected him to
be wearing a full dress uniform, but alas he was in a custom made tuxedo (regular, not bow tie). He was
surrounded by a small entourage of military folks, one of them was General John Jumper, Chief of Staff
of the Air Force. He grabbed his drink and then was escorted into the Exhibition Hall for a few photographs
of him with various other award winners. The buzz was getting louder with each minute...it's MacGyver...no, it's
Colonel O'Neill...no, it's the guy from General Hospital... words of "I gotta get my picture taken with him" was the
mantra being heard over and over...and not only by the women! He was warm, friendly and gracious
with every request asked of him..this especially after spending the entire morning meeting and greeting with the wounded at
Walter Reed Hospital and taking a light speed tour of the Pentagon.
I was able to ask him a few quesitons before he was whisked away to be seated at the dinner. I asked him about his visit
to Walter Reed. He said that the experience "would stay with me forever" and that he wished he had thought to
go and visit the soldiers much earlier than now, by his own accord. After a few more questions and of course a few
personal photographs, we was whisked away to be seated in the ballroom for the dinner.
The lights went down and the spotlight shown on the podium that was set up in the middle of the stage. After a few
introductions, General John Jumper arrived on stage to announce a very special VIP in the audience. They showed
a compilation clip of Stargate SG-1, particularly the episodes with General Ryan and General Jumper in them.
The lights came up and Richard Dean Anderson was introduced. The audience rose to it's feet in applause. General Jumper
started his speech with listing all of RDA's talents and merits...he began by presented RDA with a carved statue
of an eagle, that signifies the Air Force and then went on to say that Jack O'Neill was recently promoted to the rank
of Brigadier General on Stargate SG-1 and that it was about time, since he saved
the world nearly every week...and with that, they presented RDA with an honorary set of General's stars...
all to the cheers and a standing ovation from the audience.
Finally, the General Jumper officially introduced Richard Dean Anderson...and it was
his turn to go to the podium to speak. He started by tell everyone to "please sit down already"...and went on to tell
a few tales from his experiences with General Ryan during the filming of that episode and with much thanks
and gratitude, he went back to his table to have dinner.
Roughly fifteen minutes from that time...the fire alarm went off at the hotel and had to be evacuated!! There
were at least 3000 people in the ballroom, not to mention the remainder of the guests at the hotel. All you saw was
a sea of men and women in formal uniform milling about. One after another, RDA held court for anyone and everyone
who wanted an autograph or picture taken with him...It was about an hour and a half before the all clear
was sounded and everyone was allowed to go back in...I could finally drive off the grounds and head home.
I am most sure, with that kind of ending, Richard Dean Anderson will NEVER forget his day in Washington, D.C.
I sincerely hope that I can resolve the picture problem that I'm experiencing...I may have to ask one of you to
work some magic for me...maybe even if I have to forward them to someone in order to accomplish this task. Sorry
about that guys...I'm trying.
