28th August 2003 - Departure from Golden to Jasper Along Icefield Parkway past Mistaya Canyon, Parker Ridge - Saskatchewan Glacier, Athabasca Glacier to Pine Bungalow Park. Our hiking uphill to the Saskatchewan Glacier (only 250m altitude difference in a distance of 3km) was a little bit more difficult, because the day before I watched the weather report in television (which I usually don´t watch), and because they predicted that the rain would come down the next day, I dressed in my leather pants. Contrary to the weather report, however, it did not rain and I found out that leather pant are definitely not the best choice of legwear for hiking or walking or climbing or any other activity in the sun. Leather sticking to sweating skin absolutely hampers free movement of your legs! |

29th August 2003 - Excursion to Mount Whistler with the Jasper Tramway (Jasper) Early in the morning we took an excursion on Mount Whistler. There is a magnificent view from there across the chain of mountains, the Canadian Rockies and also, if you have luck, to cloudless Mt. Robson, the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. After a short climb to the peak of the Mount Whistler we went downhill with the tramway. After that we start out for Maligne Lake, past Medicine Lake. At the end, just a short trip to Lake Annette, on which a motor-cyclist from Minnesota, R.D.A´s birthplace, was waiting for us. What better omen could you ask for! In the evening in Pine Bungalow Park we came upon some Canadian deer (or they could also have been small moose). While cooking spaghetti in our kitchen they looked through the window of our bungalow. Funny! (Honestly, I swear!) |

30th August 2003 - Departure from Jasper to Kamloops (Jasper - Banff) Departure from Jasper, past Moose Lake (aha, "Moose"), Mount Robson (cloudless!) and through Clearwater. In Barriere we could see the track of a forest fire directly up to the street. In Kamloops we need a little bit more time for check-in at the HIC because the city of Kamloops is full of one-way-streets. Then we went to a chinese restaurant, the Oriental Garden to eat. The evening walk was very nice because it was a great sunset on this evening and there was a concert in the park. |

31st August 2003 - Departure from Kamloops to Lillooet The first order of the day was to get up very early, because we wanted to go to the traditional railway of Kamloops. So out of bed and go! After the checkout in the HIC, which is in the old courthouse of Kamloops, we went in the direction of Lillooet, were we on the way to Vancouver Island. The way past Cache Creek, Had Creek Ranch, Marble Canyon in the direction of the Mile-o-Motel. By the way, the name Lillooet is based on a spelling mistake, because the correct name was Lill-Mat (in the old language of the Indians in this region). |
